Barack Obama has finally chosen his Secretary of Agriculture, and according to an article in the NYTimes, a lot of foodies aren't too pleased with his choice (former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack), saying that he isn't progressive enough. The real news in the article, however, is that there's a relatively new blog out there entirely devoted to Obama and food, called Obamafoodorama.com. Nice! Now I have one go-to spot for all my Obama updates, from the Spam Musubi he ate in Hawaii to the Barack bust someone sculpted out of chocolate. There are also lots of great pics of Barack: ordering shave ice in a deli, wearing an apron surrounded by corn cobs, drinking a can of -- something (Coke? Beer? Powerade?). It'll also keep you up to date on more serious topics, like the food safety problems he'll have to deal with (most recently -- Mexico is denying imports from 30 American meat processors --ouch!), inauguration plans and the appointment of Under Secretary for Food Safety.
So thanks, Eddie Gehman Kohan, for obsessing about Obama's ice cream, chili recipes, and Hawaiian plate lunches. You've made my job a lot easier.
Around Thanksgiving, everyone starts making fun of turducken. You know -- a chicken stuffed in a duck stuffed in a turkey? I've never tried it, but I know people who have and they say it's actually pretty tasty. Makes sense to me -- I love all three birds individually, so why not all at once? Well, apparently the folks at Bacon Today decided to apply the "bacon makes everything better" theory to the Thanksgiving turducken. What I love, though, is that they didn't just wrap the outside of the turkey with bacon; they went whole hog (ha) and wrapped each bird in bacon before stuffing it into the next one, then wrapped the entire masterpiece in bacon. Now, that's a serious commitment.
I love this idea -- Andrew of Very Good Taste has posted a list of 100 foods every omnivore should try at least once. If you want to play, follow his instructions:
Here’s what I want you to do:
1) Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.
2) Bold all the items you’ve eaten.
3) Cross out any items that you would never consider eating.
4) Optional extra: Post a comment at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results.
