I read today that the Yankees will be adding a huge steakhouse in the new Yankee stadium that's currently being constructed (slated to open for the 2009 season). I think this is a pretty great idea; I mean, the Yankees are the biggest baseball franchise in the world, so for their glitzy new stadium, they might as well go all-out and include a glitzy, over-the-top restaurant. Let's face it -- in a world where Alex Rodriguez earns $28 million annually (more than the entire Florida Marlins team make combined, btw), you really can't expect anything less from the Yankees and George Steinbrenner. Sadly, this isn't the year 2000. So I say, embrace it and have fun with it.
They haven't consulted me on the menu (yet), but it's pretty much a no-brainer that they should serve steaks named after players (and will arrive at your table freshly branded with the players' number). So you could order a "55, medium rare" and you'd get a slab of Kobe beef (that's Matsui's number); order a "Giambi, well done," and you'd get a gigantic porterhouse. The "A-Rod" would be a Kobe steak slathered with white truffles and edible gold leaf, served with a side of foie gras mashed potatoes garnished with Beluga caviar. And "#2, the Derek Jeter special?" That would be a filet mignon, of course.
Baseball and beer go hand-in-hand, but sticking a bow on a six-pack for Father's Day might not do the trick. Here's a unique Father's Day gift idea that's a little more special: Charity Wines partners with superstar athletes to create specially-branded bottles of wine that help raise money for the players' charities of choice. As part of its Longball Cellars brand, they've recently rolled out some wines from Mets and Yankees players, including Jorge Posada's Cabernet Sauvignon, Bobby Abreu's Merlot and Brian Schneider's Chardonnay. Other teams' players' wines are available as well (any Red Sox or Braves fans out there?), so if Dad is a baseball nut, consider picking up a bottle (and maybe pairing with tickets to an upcoming game for an extra-nice gift). I've tasted some of the wines, and they'd be great for everyday drinking, especially since each bottle only costs around $14. You can order online, or check with your local wine store to see if it carries them.
