Do Pine Nuts Leave a Bad Taste in Your Mouth?
You're not alone. There's a bizarre, increasingly common phenomenon that's been happening lately -- people are reporting that after eating pine nuts, "they have developed a foul, metallic taste in their mouth lasting for up to two weeks, making practically all food and drink unpalatable," according to Daily Mail online. The first reported incidents of "pine mouth" began last winter and are growing; doctors and experts can't figure out what's causing it. It's not an allergic reaction; no pesticides or metals were found in tested pine nuts, and those that caused pine mouth weren't chemically different from those that didn't. Most puzzling of all -- some people get the reaction and others don't, even if they've eaten from the same batch of pine nuts.
This is the first I'm hearing about pine mouth, and I admit, I'm a little wary of eating pine nuts (and pesto, which contains pine nuts) now. Having everything I eat and drink for two weeks taste medicinal, metallic and become utterly inedible and undrinkable? No thanks.
Have you experienced pine mouth or know someone who has? Tell us about it.

This happened to myself and family! We couldn't figure out what was causing the metallic almost a bile taste in our mouth until I read this article! We all ate pine nuts! 2 WEEKS of this??? UGH!
My roommate and I both had this happen at the same time and were concerned there was something wrong with our water or living conditions. Then we realized we had just made pesto together and it looks like it might be from the pine nuts! Thankfully for both of us it only lasted two days, and I think I'd still eat pesto again. :)
Wow -- I had some pine nuts in a salad recently and was a little nervous about ordering them, but luckily, my taste buds are fine. Such a bizarre phenomenon!
I am suffering from pine mouth right now. I ate a salad at a wedding last Saturday, and there were pine nuts on the salad. I never eat pine nuts, but I did that night. By Monday, I had the awful, bitter taste in the back of my mouth and couldn't understand what it was. Tuesday, I began researching online, thinking maybe I was developing thrush or some other unlikely problem...and then something caught my eye about "pine mouth". Well, I read a couple of articles that came up in the search engine and then contacted some friends who were at that wedding and ate the salad. One out of three of those friends was also experiencing pine mouth, and she was about to go to the doctor because she couldn't figure out what was wrong. I knew then that it was caused by the pine nuts, and told her what I had found out about it. I still have the bitter taste but it is slowly getting better...I figure by next weekend it should be just about gone. I didn't eat a ton of them, and maybe that will mean it will not last a full 2 weeks (or more!). I'm heading out on vacation in 6 days and really don't want pine mouth on a cruise, making all that yummy food taste bad!! I will never knowingly eat pine nuts again. Even though the Chinese ones are an obvious culprit, I've read some message boards online that people have had this happen after eating pine nuts from just about anywhere.
I made an orzo salad a few weeks ago which contained pine nuts. I got the horrible taste but wondered about everything except the salad. I made the dish again this weekend and the taste came back. I thought I had an infection or was very ill until I researched online and found so many people saying the same thing about pine nuts.
I have made pesto many times in the past and I don't remember this happening. I would be very concerned about eating pine nuts in the future and this kills me because I love pesto and have a ton of basil growing. Does anyone know if you could use walnuts in a pesto sauce?
I have had a horrible taste since Sunday. This article made me remember I had pine nuts on Sunday. I made pesto last night too. I thought there might be something wrong. Next time I'll use walnuts in my pesto.
Seems like there are a lot of you who've experienced pine mouth! I've been lucky so far -- eaten pine nuts a few times, but no strange tastes...
Wow, this is a strange phenomenon happening to a lot of people right now. My husband and my children and I all had pine nuts on Friday, but it wasn't until Sunday that my husband and I had the foul taste. Our children haven't noticed anything. I thought it was something in the air; we live just outside Los Angeles. Is everyone here from Southern California?
I'm experiencing the same soapy, bitter taste in my mouth that started today. I made and ate pesto with pine nuts a couple of days before. I thought I was suddenly having side effects from medications I've been taking for years, but upon googling have found many hits linking the bad taste to eating pine nuts. Who would've thought?
I just came across this because I too have "pine mouth". It started today, had pesto with nuts two days ago. I called my husband and he said he is suffering with the same thing too. Did a search to see what it could be and found all this info... Weird.
Holly molly. Two years in a row I have not been able to figure out what the problem was. I was attributing this condition to allergies. But I too was enjoying some fresh garden pesto made with pine nuts. Which was probably the same time last year. Seriously bizzare...and I've asked everyone I know if they have ever experienced this and noone had. Truly weird. But helpful. No more pine nuts for me!!
I eat pine nuts all the time, I love them. I make pesto a lot, and this has never happened... until last night when I went to eat out with friends and said "This wine is terrible, the after taste is nasty!" My friends tried it and it and said it was fine. Then everything including my food had a yucky, bitter after taste. Still going on all day today.
I had a handful of pine nuts on Friday and had them on my salad.
I will check where they come from for now on...
My family of four is also going througt this right now. We made a salad with pine nuts bought at safeway in canada.2 days later we are all suffering. about 10 more days to go i guess.
I ate 2 small pine nuts on Thursday and since Friday I have had the awful taste in the back of my mouth. I was making chocolate chips cookies on Friday and the batter, which usually tastes divine, tasted awful, making me think something I used was expired or stale. It wasn't. The finished cookies also had a strange taste too. Except..they tasted fine to everyone else.
I thought the bad taste in my mouth was a result of new vitamins, but I stopped taking those and the gross metallic taste is still there. It is mainly when I eat something that I notice it most.
This is just unbelievable!
This is a very real problem that needs to be resolved by the large corporations importing these pine nuts. I urge every one of you who have suffered with this annoying problem to contact your local FDA representative. Then, contact the stores where you purchased them and demand that they pull these pine nuts off their shelves. I don't think the stores are taking this problem seriously. I am going through this "pine mouth" problem right now and while I realize that there are other problems that are more serious in our lives, this is annoying enough that something should be done. It's not like years of research need to be done to find a cure. The stores simply have to remove the product from their shelves.
I was wondering why I've had this bitter taste in my mouth the last 2 days...and now I know why, my Costco Pine Nuts!! I ate a large handful a few days ago, and dumb me, I had them in my pantry (not refrigerated!!) Does anyone have a cure for this nasty taste?? I knew I fixed a great dinner tonight, but to me, it tasted terrible!! Please help me find a cure for this bad bitter taste!! Thank you!!
I am so relieved that other people have experienced this. I have had this horrible taste all day and was sure that I must have a strage illness. I just made some pesto 2 days ago and used a variety of pine nuts I had never used. I am relieved!! But yuck, the taste is really bad... anyone know how long it lasts?
Same thing happened to me. I bought a salad from Summo Salad in Sydney city 3 days ago which had pine nuts. I believe the pine nuts must have been the Asian imported ones. Anyway, I developed this bad bitter taste at the back of my throat only as an after taste when eating any type of food even sweet stuff. Water is the only thing that doesnt leave a bad taste. As we dont have a cure, I am going to drink lots of lemon water, green tea and eating berries to try and detox to get rid of this taste.
I noticed the metallic taste in the back of my mouth Saturday morning. I threw out perfectly good food thinking it might be spoiled but everything since has tasted awful. I ate pinenuts in a salad last Wednesday and would never have related the two things except that I googled "bitter taste in mouth" and saw all these posts on pinenuts. Today is Monday, 5 days since I last ate those nuts and I still have that taste. I feel a slight tingly numb feeling on the tip of my tongue and lips, too. Have a drs. appointment tomorrow, just to be sure and am taking the articles I pulled off the web.
I bought a new container of pine nuts from our local market and have experienced the same thing! I started the reaction the next day by noon and then used more pine nuts last night! By ths morning it was really bothering me. Does anyone know of any remedy? I can't get the taste out of my mouth (two days).
