Derby Drinking
As far as sporting events go, the Kentucky Derby is pretty much ideal. Unlike the Super Bowl or March Madness, there's very minimal commitment involved (the whole thing is over in just a few minutes). You get to wear cool hats while you watch it. And it combines two of my favorite things: horses and drinking. In fact, the Derby is so special that it has its own signature cocktail -- the mint julep. A mixture of sugar, mint, ice and bourbon, this southern favorite is traditionally served in a silver julep cup. There are lots of variations on the mint julep; here's one for you to try as you're cheering on your favorite this Saturday:
The 54 Julep
- 2 1/2 ounces Wild Turkey 101 bourbon
- 3 sprigs of mint (six to eight mature-sized leaves)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons brown sugar
- 1/2 cup crushed ice
In a traditional silver julep cup or double-old fashioned glass, mull two sprigs of mint with the brown sugar and one ounce of Wild Turkey 101 for a few minutes, crushing the mint leaves with a spoon. Add the crushed ice, the rest of the bourbon, and garnish with sprig of mint. Enjoy!

Way more civilized than a pitcher of Bud, don't you think?
