Cheese, Bread, Honey and Wine...What More Could You Want?

A few weeks ago I checked out a relatively new restaurant/bar called Blue Ribbon Downing Street Bar (long name, but there are a bunch of other "Blue Ribbon" restaurants around the city so the more specific each name is, the better). It's a tiny place, with a large selection of wines and small plates that are perfect for sharing. Now, a lot of wine bars have pretty minimal food -- maybe some plates of charcuterie, cheeses and olives -- but Blue Ribbon Bar has a full menu of really tasty, unusual bites. Some standouts include the "egg shooters" (hard-boiled eggs split in half and garnished with various toppings; basically, a re-invention of the deviled egg) and the pickled beef tongue toast (their "toasts" are open-faced sandwiches topped with delicious, unique things). Another amazingly addictive toast on their menu is also amazingly simple to make yourself, in your very own kitchen. Don't believe me? Well, here's the recipe for Blue Ribbon's cheese and honey toast:

Ingredients

  • 3/4-inch thick slice of good-quality white Pullman bread (they use their own Blue Ribbon bread but any high-quality fresh bread will work)
  • 1 oz of thinly sliced Manchego cheese
  • 2 teaspoons Mexican honey

Directions:

1. Toast bread.

2. Then spread the honey evenly over toast.

3. Top with Manchego cheese.  Cut in half and serve immediately.

That's it, you say? Um...yeah, that's it. Incredibly simple, but when using top-notch ingredients, the results are delectably good. Try making it at home for a satisfying snack that's both savory and sweet (glass of wine optional).

Oh no, this recipe is too easy to make. I'm going to be snacking on too much of this toast.
